How long do LEDs last?
LEDs are notable for being extremely long-lasting products. Many LEDs have a rated life of up to 50,000 hours. This is approximately 50 times longer than a typical incandescent, 20-25 times longer than a typical halogen, and 8-10 times longer than a typical CFL. Used 12 hours a day, a 50,000 bulb will last more than 11 years. Used 8 hours a day, it will last 17 years!
How efficient are led bulbs compared to incandescent bulbs?
The efficacy of the newer led light bulbs is more than five times higher than comparable incandescent bulbs. In other words, led light bulbs use only about 20% as much electricity to produce the same amount of light. However, because led bulbs direct a larger percentage of light where it is needed, in many applications they are as much as ten times as effective as incandescent bulbs, reducing energy use by 90%.
What do "cool white" and "warm white" mean, and what is CCT?
The Color Correlated Temperature (CCT) is given in the description of each of our white led bulbs. The color (CCT) of our white bulbs ranges from a warm yellow white (2700K) to a cool blue white (7000K). By comparison, a typical incandescent bulb has a CCT of 2800K. A typical halogen is a bit higher, maybe 3500K. Daylight white is 4500K and a cool white fluorescent is 6000K or more. The human eye adapts to background light so that even a daylight white bulb will look slightly blue in a room illuminated mainly with incandescent bulbs. Similarly, an incandescent bulb will look very yellow or even orange in midday sunlight.
What are the benefits of replacing your ordinary bulbs with the LED?
There are many benefits. Here is a list of a few:
a. An immediate reduction in your electricity bill.
b. Less heat. LED fixtures are extremely efficient converting electricity into light.
c. LED Bulbs last a very long time, from 30,000 to 200,000 hours.
d. They are virtually indestructible.
e. They do not contain mercury or other hazardous materials.
f. Highly recyclable - with no hazardous parts, you can easily reclaim most of the parts in an environmentally safe way.
Can LED bulbs be used with dimmer controls?
Yes and No. First, not all LEDs are dimmable. The driver must be designed to allow dimming. Secondly, you must purchase the right type of dimmer. Most retail stores now carry dimmers specifically designed for LED bulbs. Please note, if you purchase a non-dimmable LED bulb and try to dim it, it will cause the bulb to fail and also void the warranty.
What's the difference between LED and CFL?
Both lights are energy efficient light sources that are much more efficient than the bulbs they replace. Here is a small list of the differences between CFLs and LEDs:
1 CFLs are the spiral tube like bulbs. They are really mini fluorescent bulbs with self contained ballasts. They contain a small amount of mercury.
LED bulbs are the new style looking bulbs with heat sinks and round mini globes. They do not contain mercury.
2 You can replace a 22W CFL bulb with a 11W LED bulb.
3 LED bulbs are instant on, instant off. CFLs take 30 seconds to 1 minute to warm up after they are turned on
4 LED bulbs are not affected by turning them off and on. CFL bulbs are, as this will reduce their life.
Are bulbs with more leds brighter than bulbs with less?
The number of leds is not the determining factor of bulb brightness. Different types of leds vary greatly in size and light output. The most accurate indicators of the brightness of LED bulbs are the measured lumens or lux. Lumens measure the total amount of light output from a bulb. Lux measures how bright the light is on a surface at a specified distance.
What is the difference between a floodlight and a spotlight?
Led spotlights output a narrower beam of light, typically less than 45 degrees wide. Most of the light from a spotlight is concentrated onto a relatively small area producing a bright spot. Led floodlights output a wider beam of light, up to 120 degrees, so the light from a floodlight is spread out over a much larger area. Because the light is more concentrated, a spotlight will appear brighter than a floodlight but only within its narrower beam. A spotlight is more suited to illuminating objects and a floodlight is more suited to illuminating areas.
How bright are led light bulbs?
Led bulbs available for standard fixtures vary in brightness from less than 50 lumens up to about 1200 lumens. The brightest led bulbs for standard fixtures are the floodlights and spotlights. The brightest of these uses about 25 watts and produces light comparable to a 120-watt incandescent. The brightest LED bulbs with approximately the same size and shape as ordinary incandescent bulbs produce up to 600 lumens. With a few exceptions these bulbs are somewhat directional so they are most effective when pointed at the area to be illuminated.
